Special preview screening of the 'Arming Sisters' documentary, and Q&A with the filmmaker
(Movie/Film)
Please join us on Friday, April 5 at 4 p.m. for a special preview screening of "Arming Sisters." This documentary profiles six women who are working on a grass-roots level to combat violence against Native women on the Fort Berthold Reservation and beyond.
The Ft. Berthold Reservation (the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nations) in North Dakota is struggling with a recent escalation in crime due to the influx of transient workers from the Bakken crude oil boom. One of the startling effects of the recent oil boom is a rise in sex trafficking and sexual violence against Native women.
According to the US Dept of Justice, Native American women are 2.5 times more likely to experience sexual assault than all other American women. Amnesty International found that 1 in 3 Native women reports having been raped during her lifetime and that 86% of the offenses are committed by non-Native men.
Join director/producer/cinematographer Willow O'Feral for a Q&A after the screening.
This event made possible with support from the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences, The School of Performing Arts, and the American Indian Studies Program. More information...
