  Bonsai Program
(Special Event)

Please register for this program by May 9th by emailing vtgarden@vt.edu. Cost is $5 for Friends of the Garden/VT Students and $10 for the General Public.

Join the Hahn Garden for a talk about Bonsai by Ben Kirkland. Ben is a professional Industrial Designer and content creator for the YouTube channel Appalachian Bonsai. He is currently attending Virginia Tech in pursuit of a Master of Science in Architecture with the goal of teaching future designers.

Bonsai isn't some exotic fantasy. It's at your fingertips every day. Look in your backyard, and you'll find material perfectly suited to this art. By creating bonsai with the trees that surround you, others will become inspired to also look around. With that realization, there is an immediate emotional experience that deepens the respect of where you live. Reach out and touch it! Bonsai takes time, but it isn't hard. Really. It's a practice, a meditation, a therapy session, an art form.

Ben has been creating bonsai since 2007. He is a member of the Hinoki Bonsai Club, founded in Roanoke, VA. He was the president of the club from 2016-2018 and has given several lectures and demos about bonsai in the surrounding area. You may find him online with videos, attending monthly meetings in Roanoke, or traveling to the Carolina Bonsai Expo in Asheville, NC every October. He and his wife Julie reside in Christiansburg, Virginia.
