  Percussion Ensemble presents: Magic Time
(Music/Theatre/Dance)

The Virginia Tech Percussion Ensemble welcomes the esteemed percussionist, composer, and educator, Russell Hartenberger, to campus for a residency culminating in an evening of exciting percussion music.

Hartenberger is Professor Emeritus and former Dean of the Faculty of Music, University of Toronto. He is also a member of the internationally renowned percussion ensemble, Nexus, and has been a member of the group, Steve Reich and Musicians, since 1971.

On the May 4th concert, the Escape Ten percussion duo (Dr. Annie Stevens, Virginia Tech and Dr. Andrea Venet, University of North Florida) in collaboration with the Virginia Tech Percussion Ensemble will present the world premiere of Hartenberger's Magic Time for seven percussionists, a piece commissioned by the Escape Ten duo. "Magic Time" will feature newly designed tuned cymbals, created exclusively for this piece by Dream Cymbals and Gongs out of Toronto, Canada. This Reich-inspired work features the duo on the marimba, and members of the percussion ensemble on tuned gongs, cymbals, and other mallet instruments. It is sure to be an exciting night of percussion premieres!
