Planning for Autonomous Vehicles in Arlington
(Greater Washington DC Metro Area)
Virginia Tech's Autonomous Vehicle (AV) Studio, in partnership with Arlington County's Mobility Lab, studied several aspects of AVs in depth to inform the County on what impact AVs could have.
The AV studio is a capstone of the Masters in Urban and Regional Planning program.
The preliminary report reviews the existing literature on autonomous vehicles and includes original research such as survey of over 200 people who live or work near the Ballston Metro station about their attitudes towards AVs and interviews with over a dozen developers from the DMV area to learn how the private sector is thinking about the impact of AVs on their future plans, as well as a scenario planning tool to help residents and decision-makers think about planning for parking in a future with heavy AV use.
