Remapping the Yaqui Experience: Mobility in Everyday Life and Community Formation
(Special Event)

Yaqui people are recognized as either place-bound or displaced despite being Indigenous to the Sonoran Desert landscape. This view has not only dominated popular perception throughout the 20th century but scholarship on both sides of the border. Anabel Galindo's research sets out to unravel this narrative by demonstrating how mobility has been an essential part of everyday life among the Yaqui. State violence associated with forced removals of the late 19th and early 20th century has marred Yaqui mobility displacing other narratives and marginalizing Yaquis as historical agents. Challenging the scholarship's fixation with forced migration, her work extending back to the colonial period and into the mid-twentieth century remaps how communities flourished and thrived outside the sanctioned traditional homeland, and how individuals wrestled to express and reimagine their Yaqui identity.
