Webinar: COVID-19 in a Long Historical Perspective
(Academic)
This talk by Samuel Cohn, Professor of Medieval History, University of Glasgow, will race through two and a half millennia of history, from the Plague of Athens to the present, charting trends in epidemic diseases' propensities to spark blame and social violence or volunteerism and self-sacrifice. At least one exception will be highlighted, namely when the cholera pandemic of 1831 reached Berlin. At the end, a model for epidemics' social side effects will be proposed and used to evaluate our current situation with COVID-19. Duane Osheim, Professor Emeritus, University of Virginia, will moderate. This is the fifth in a six-part webinar series titled "COVID-19 in Transatlantic Perspective: U.S. and Germany." The series is co-sponsored by the Campus Weeks Initiative of the Federal Republic of Germany; and the Center for German Studies, the Department of German, and the European Studies Program at the University of Virginia. It is organized in collaboration with the German Program at Virginia Tech.
