Wendy Parker- "How should societal values influence climate research?"

I will examine at least two ways that societal values might appropriately influence climate research. Least controversial is value influence in the selection of research questions. A more controversial suggestion is that societal values ought to sometimes influence choices made by scientists in the 'internal' stages of research -- as they select instruments, build models, interpret data, evaluate evidence and reach conclusions. I will outline some philosophical arguments for this more controversial claim and present an alternative, less-radical framing of such value influence. Along the way, I will also provide some examples that illustrate how the question of societal value influence is emerging in practice in recent climate science.
