Summer Arts Festival presents Bach cello suites
(Arts)
On this evening, local cellist Benjamin Wyatt will perform three of Bach's solo cello suites.
The suites, abandoned for more than a hundred years after their composition, were revived by the late Spanish cellist Pablo Casals in the early 20th century. Since that time, they have been staples of the cello repertoire.
Suites are collections of dances, generally prefaced by an introductory prelude. These French courtly dances include the allemande (French for "German"), the courante, the sarabande (originally a fast vulgar South American dance called the "zarabandeo" that morphed into a slow, stately dance by Bach's time), and the gigue, which we known in English as "jig."
Thursday Night Indoor Concerts are presented by Virginia Tech and the Town of Blacksburg as part of the 2022 Summer Arts Festival. More information...
